Job Description

Summary

The Department of Family and Community Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a caring, compassionate, reliable Medical Assistant to support the clinicians providing primary care services to private practice patients.

 

As a Medical Assistant II, you will assist in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of the physicians and/or advanced practice providers. The main responsibilities include interviewing patients, measuring vital signs, and recording information in patients' electronic charts using EPIC. Shifts will include 7:30-4:30; 8:00-5:00; 8:30-5:30; 9:00-6:00; 9:30-6:30, Monday-Friday.

 

This position is located at our Fannin Tower location in the Texas Medical Center.

Job Duties

  • Greets patients and escorts them to exam rooms.
  • Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs, drawing blood, and in some cases administering tests such as EKGs.
  • Answers clinic telephones and resolves issues or routes calls to appropriate person. 
  • Collects patient histories, including medication reconciliation.
  • Correctly collects and labels patient specimens for lab analysis
  • Sets up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
  • Schedules patient tests and appointments and prepares patient charts.
  • Maintains patient and services rooms in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Conducts patient outreach phone calls and post visit follow-ups.
  • Takes an inventory of clinic supplies and orders new supplies and equipment.
  • Sorts clinic mail and files patient medical records.
  • Educates patients about their conditions and self-care.
  • Assists providers in filling out health related paperwork for patients.
  • Staffs central college sites as needed.
  • Cross trains to gain proficiency in staffing Comm Center, monitors inventory, and converts visits to virtual appointments.
  • Monitors assigned provider baskets, completes high priority messages and addresses incoming patient encounters. 
  • Serves as a resource for navigating complex patient inquiries or procedural nuances.
  • Guides entry-level Medical Assistants and externs on best practices and departmental workflows, contributing to the overall training and development of less experienced staff as needed.
  • Assists with the onboarding process for new hires by demonstrating key procedures and sharing insights into our specific operational requirements.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and maintains mutual respect in all interactions with patients and employees.
  • Reports to the worksite on time to support efficient clinic operations and minimize disruptions to patient flow.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned, including floating to other FCM clinic locations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NHA, NAHP, AMCA, AAH, AAMP, or NPS).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of health care field and medical terminology.
  • Experience with Epic.
  • Proficiency in Spanish or other language.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously in all interactions with a strong understanding of when to elevate issues.
  • Ability to type at a minimum of 40 WPM.
